Overview

Established in 1964 in technical collaboration with EVR, France, the Kundara unit of KEL specializes in the manufacturing of Brushless Alternators and allied electrical systems for Indian Railways and Defence applications. Over the decades, this division has built a strong legacy, with more than 80,000+ alternators in active service across Indian Railways and various strategic institutions.

Today, the division continues to evolve, contributing significantly to indigenous manufacturing capabilities, in line with the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative.

The division has also successfully developed and supplied the 230 kW Traction Alternator for Diesel Electric Tower Cars (DETC) of Indian Railways. Nearly 150 units of this traction alternator have been supplied as of June 2025, further reinforcing our technical competency and reliability in the rail traction sector.

KEL Kundara has forayed into the electric mobility sector with a focused initiative to develop indigenous EV traction motors for both light and heavy-duty applications. Currently, 5 kW and 6 kW HSRM motors are under development for Electric Three-Wheelers (E-Autos), engineered to deliver optimal performance in urban and last-mile transport environments.

For the commercial vehicle segment, a 120 kW Double Squirrel Cage Induction Motor has been developed specifically for electric buses and trucks. This heavy-duty traction motor is presently undergoing prototype testing and is designed to meet the rigorous demands of commercial transport operations.

These developments reflect KEL’s strategic vision to support the growing demand for electric mobility solutions by leveraging its electromechanical expertise and expanding its product portfolio to include advanced, sustainable technologies.
